12 May51. Removed S. Bldg., room 3, east side, 2.60-5.50 s. of n. wall, 2687-6( hard reddish soil, rough stones, few only, averaging between egg and fist size, none larger; no tiles, about 1/8 bucket sherds, and one animal bone which I am placing in sherd bag. No other finds. This stratum goes down to bedrock, south of early wall, across trench. This wall is founded on bedrock, extends up to stylobate wall and goes under east wall of room 3. The wall is definitely earlier than stylobate wall and probably - almost certainly - earlier than east ashlar wall which appears to have been constructed over it. It is not at right angles to it. See Film 155-17.

Removed also north of this early wall 2687-6(n) 4 sherds only. Same as 2687-6(s) except that stones were a little smaller on average, the largest being egg size.

The stylobate wall is bonded into the north wall of the east side (the north stylobate wall) only at level higher than 1.17 m. below top of restored coping blocks. Below this level it goes up to the wall only. See Film 155-16 Also Diary page 2749 & Film 155-26.

Removed S. Bldg. room 3, east side, p. 2711-3, moderately compact, reddish brown soil, many rough stones averaging egg to fist size with a few up to half foot size; at bottom of stratum is a layer of fallen S. Bldg. roof tiles belonging to a destruction antedating the erection of the [illegible] See Film 155-18 and 19.

Removed SE Bldg., N 4-9, E 30-34, 2705-1, moderately compact soil varying in color from dark dull brown (darkened by roots) to reddish brown; many rough stones varying in size up to bucket size, many of foot size; 4 tile frags. and 2 pipe frags. which I am stacking on wall at 29.00 m. E and at 14.00 north. 18 sherds. 1 figurine frag. placed in sherd bag. 1 architectural frag. in marble(?) F 1794. Coins F 1795-7. Signet ring F 1798. Lamp broncer type XXVIII F 1799 and glass F 1800. See Film 155-20. This stratum consists of debri[s]

14 May51. Removed S. Bldg., room 1, east side, 1.50-5.90 m. s. of north wall, p. 2711-3, moderately loose reddish soil, rough stones, comparatively few averaging egg size, none larger than fist size. About 1/7 bucket sherds. Nearly wheelbarrow load of tiles including 3 large cover tiles F 1801. These tiles were strewn over bottom of stratum

and appear to have fallen here in some early destruction before construction of S. Bldg. From here came also F 1802-3. From sieve xxx comes handful of sherds. No other finds. Stacking tiles all but those under F 1801 on early wall at 5.80 m. s. of n. wall. See Film 155-31.

Removed S. Bldg. room 3, east side, 1.80-2.80 s. of north wall, 30-1.30 west of east wall, fill of early orthostates, very few stones save at top of fill. These upper stones show in Film 155. Loose reddish brown soil with stone[s] averaging walnut size the largest being egg size. There may have been a floor level under this fill at level of bottom of orthostates which were placed here to support a kind of shelf as in the S. Bldg. that was constructed over this remains of an earlier building. See Film 155-21 & 22. Removed from here 7 tile frags. which are to be cleaned & stored, a bout 1/3 bucket sherds; a few small metal frags. which I am placing in box in sherd bag, and pot handle with incised

character F 1804. From sieve come 2 handfuls of sherds. No other finds.

Removed from same area but 00-0.30 m. west of east wall 2687-7E, 2703-7E, much the same in character & color to 2687-7 and 2703-7, about 2 handfuls of sherds and one animal bone (in sherd bag) . One tile frag. No other finds. See Film 155-21 & 22. Strata on e. side shows no sign anywhere of footing trench
