sherd belongs to a class that does not occur in sealed deposits antedating the construction of the S. Bldg. (101 A.D.). No doubt but that sherd was found here. Either the sherd is earlier than seems possible or else there was another floor, laid in 101 A.D., which was dug into at some later period and the hole was sealed up by a later floor the remains of which we still have. 4 tile frags. which I have placed just west of entrance to conduit with one piece of lime wall plaster. Sherds placed in box.

8 March51 & 9 Mar. Removed room 5, w. side, 5.40-11.55 m. north of s. wall, p. 2525-5e, over bedrock moderately compact red soil without stones - some of rock already appeared at bottom of 4 e. 2 handfuls sherds, no tiles. No other finds.

Removed same area P. 2523-3w., w. of early wall

reddish loose soil with great many rough stones averaging egg to foot size. See Film 151-29. About 1/6 bucket sherds; 4 tile frags. which I am stacking on west wall at 10.00 m. north of s. wall of building. From sieve somes about 3 handfuls of sherds. One pot handle with incised character F 1644.

Removed corridor 4, 2.60-3.30 s. of n. wall, 00-0.60 m. below top of 2517-2, being a floor level, corresponding with 2517-2&3, in depth; - very loose brown soil, light brown, with many rough stones, ranging from egg to foot in size About 1/5 bucket sherds, frag. stone bowl in sherd bag, 1/5 bucket tiles which I am putting on wall at west side of trench under ashlar wall - also some pieces of lime plaster.

From sieve comes handful of sherds. No other finds. Set up pier with engaged half columns at s.w. corner of S.E. Bldg. court. Top piece in 1/2 column toward Limassol restored. Filled interior with gypsum but used cement on outside. 1 white cement to 3 sand, 5 level teaspoons of yellow cement paint and 2 terracotta to every 4 cups of cement cement mortar.

16 Mar.51. Removed room 3, S. Bldg., east side, 4.00-5.10 m. n. of s. wall, 2579-1 and 2. 1 is top of fill under floor consisting of small thin rough stones. See Film 151-30 & 31. Under floor was layer of clean mud chavara without finds which did not extend to wall (e. wall). Floor is level with botto[m] of ashlars. 2579-2 dark reddish brown soil among rough stones that form kind of loose

foundation for ashlar wall. 2579-1 handful sherds. 2579-2 about 2 handfuls. No tiles. No other finds. See also 2297-13. From sieve comes handful sherds (2579-2). Nothing found in sieve for 2579-1. 2579-2 is a sealed deposit, antedating floor which clearly is contemporaneous with ashlar wall. Removed same area P. 2579-23, dark reddish fairly compact soil with very small stones only - largest being egg.size, few only. See Film 151-32. Handful of sherds & figurine frag. in sherd bag. Nothing found in sieve. Removed corridor 4, 2.60-3.30 m. s. of n. wall, 0.60 - 0.79 m. below top of 2517-2 (see p. 2580), loose dark reddish soil, stones ranging from egg to fist size, few only. 1/8 bucket sherds, 5 tile frags. placed with sherds handful sherds from sieve with one handmade figurine (in bag) No other finds. Bottom of this fill is marked by change in character & color of soil near east wall (possibly a footing trench?)

11 MarchSunday. 12 March holiday. 13 March 51. Removed S. Bldg., corridor 4, 2.60-3.30 s. of n. wall, 0.79 - 1.01 m. below top of 2517-2 being an ancient ground level, and 00-0.35 m. west of east wall white hard fill with good number rough stones averaging fist size, one about half bucket size. The fill farther east west is much darker and much less hard. The white stratum may be fill of footing trench but it seems hardly low enough. Handful of sherds only. From sieve another handful. No tiles. No other finds.
