Found large threshhold with north flanking door jamb in fill or dump (or possibly debris) stones in Trench east of Guard House at east 6.00 m. Plan p. 1653. This trench was begun Mar. 31. Page 1696 6 April 50. Removed large pan tile F 829, See Film 132-4, Temple A, w. cella, center, and another one farther north F 830. Began removing large worked blocks in this area. See Film 132-4-9 incl. Continuing to dig south end of east cella, Temple A, center, north 0-2. Large blocks in west cella center removed under Mr. Hill's direction. Doric capital no. 203 has traces of original plaster on abacus and of a later thicker coat over a section of the annuli. These annuli are on the echinus like those of the S. Bldg. and unlike the better capitals of the east nave where they are on the column shaft. Mr. Hill considers the last earlier. This is an indicatio supported by the Bldg. inscription of the S. Bldg., that the west nave belongs to Trajan's day or not much earlier. The east nave would be somewhat earlier and presumably was of Apollo Hylates, the later addition being for the Apollo Caesar of the building inscription. Finished digging 1681-2, to find earlier threshhold under later one, in north wall, of east cella, center of temple. No stones, loose dark brown earth. See Diary Apr. 5. Removed 1667-1, 1669-1 Trench 11, debris of many rough stones, tiles & some small worked blocks in addition to fallen jamb blocks & altar. A great many small rough stones found on surface in vicinity of Trench 11. Removing these. Page 1698 April 7. No excavations owing to rain. April 8. Half day only. April 9, 10, 11. Easter holidays

Few tiles in 3 but about 1/10 of a tin of water pipe frags in area 1.00 x 1.60 x 0.25. Temple A, South end, below level of raised floor and south of preserved late floor at extreme north end between naves, removed a stratum which looks like debris, soft brown earth, few tiles - p. 1699-1. Before war we dug here down to level of top of preserved floor. See Film 132-19 & 20. It would appear that this floor Page 1700 dug into at some time, about half of it, the southern half having been removed. It would have been a good place for cult statues at the end of the naves and well raised above the passage connecting them to the south. In propylon porch continued to remove p. 1659-3, loose brown earth with very … continues
