See plan and section page 839, section b-b', 47 centimeters in from south edge of pavement. Also dug out drain below another paving block( see page 837).

22 April 1948 Began second stratum (cleaning large stones in general debris) trench 9 i-xi, north 10-15 and theta-x, north 6-10. See film 105, number 16 and 17. Extended pit in street 1, as shown on page 691 to paving blocks to east to find north extension of drain. Drain found leaving from rock-hewn ancient pit which appears to Page 916 page 916 have destroyed it. Looking for continuation on other side of pit ( west side).

24 April 1948 Began removing second stratum of street 1, K-L K-lambda, west 0-8. See film 105, number 18 (colored slide). First stratum here removed before war up to 8 west. Continued removing first stratum trench 9 in same area as yesterday. Continuing cleaning temple A of growth of grass and cleaning up sanctuary in general. Joe Last is making catalogue of architectural pieces from Apollo. See film 106, number 1-21 inclusive. Removed second stratum of drain page 915-2. Usual accumulation of neglected drain.

26 April 1948 Removing third stratum of drain page 915-3. These drain strata are not actual strata but levels only arbitrarily chosen. Began Page 924 removing second stratum street 1, I-K, west 0-2 and page 924 west 6-8. See film 105, number 18 showing this area before removing second stratum. First stratum was removed before the war.

27 April 1948 Extended trench 9, north to 20 and east to p. Removing surface soil only on top of mound over on top of cave. Began clearing to debris street 1, H-I, west 0-6, stratum 1A. Mr. Hill removing fallen wall in alley east of east building.

April 28 Rained most of day. Work called off at breakfast time.

April 29 No excavations

April 30 About 17 men. Street 1, H-I, 0-8 west (see F2058, 2059). Finding many figurines, some bronzes and some coins in stratum 1A all at about same level. Among stones which look like building debris. Began dpigging

Page 928 here also M-xi, west 0-8. Stratum 1A. Surface soil removed in this area before the war. Also digging trench 9, xi-pi, north 14- 16 intrusion after removing surface soil. See film 107, number 4. Mr. Hill studying fallen wall and windows in alley east of east building. In street 1 area, Zeta-xi<s>,/ west 0-8, stratum 1A is the soil among the fallen stones and general debris. Saturday Sunday and Monday no excavations. Greek Easter Holidays. May 1-3 inclusive.

May 4 11 men only as a number of the Christians picnicing at Ayios, ^K Ermoyennis. Street 1, H-I, west 4-6 stratum 1A and M-cxi west 4-8 stratum 1A.
