north end of south section of street1. Began digging trench 9, l -[handwritten: L]ambda, north 8-10, west of street 1,where threshold occurs in west wall. See film 103, number 31. Surface soil removed here before war. Beginning second stratum. Digging trench 10,[handwritten: G]amma - [handwritten: D]elta, east 16-18 to find whether rock-hewn trench of trenches 4-6 and 10-12, extends to this point. Dug out drain block which contains from top down normal accumulation of drain,-rather wellsifted earth - no stones- some sherds and glass. It drained water into main drain leading from street 1 just north of pipe line. What appears to have been an early ground level is now appearing just south of the pipeline at about the level upon which the pipes are lying.

13 Dec. Cleaning up mostly. Removing dumps in lower plateia. Tracing rock-hewn trench opposite portico in street 1. Finished removing Page 906

page 841, stratum three, beginning four. 14 Dec. Sunday 15 Dec. No excavations on account of rain.

16 Dec. Mr. Hill leaves for Nicosia to fly to Athens early tomorrow on Cyprus Airways - a new line. No excavations.

17 Dec. Digging page 841 - 4. Continued removing dump for trench 10,A-Z, east 10-12, and 16-18 in wheelbarrows to low ground at southwest limit of precinct. Continuing to trace rock-hewn trench outside portico, street 1. Removed rough late wall on edge of pavement. street 1, opposite portico. See film 104, number 10-15 inclusive. Only two sherds found in or under wall although dug very carefully. These were under block 5 (see draftsman's working plan) directly on pavement in loose soil. All blocks being [handwritten: ?] removed to upper plateia immediately too wet. Digging trench 10, gamma - to west wall of street 1, east 12-16 down to foundation of pavement. End autumn season.

19 April 1948 Began cleaning certain area of great growth of grass made this year. About twelve men. Joe Last and Christofis drawing stones as they appear in plan on site of temple A. At south end of street 1 examined drain under pavement. Found usual accumulation of silt which shows that drain was in use after the construction of the pavement. T

20 April 1948 Continued cleaning site of wild grass, thistles,etc. Cutting grass between street 1 and temple A with power mower. Began digging trench 9. Page 914
