May 23rdContinued digging stratum 1 b Room 4 W. Bldg. Spent most of day measuring & drawing elevation of S. Bldg. May 24th. Finished digging W. Bldg. R 4 stratum 1 b and large blocks removed west of W. Bldg. - marked R 4. Began removing rest of 2nd & 3rd strata of R. 7. See cross section p. 545. 3rd stratum seems

to consist mainly of mud fallen either from upper floor or from roof. In West Bldg. Rooms 3,4,5,6,7 have this fill over floor - whitish compact fairly clean fill with only very small stones - very few sherds or tiles (check up on this) and practically no debris. Rooms 1 & 2 lack this fill - probably 1 & 2 had no upper floor - hence mud from upper floor in other rooms and roof. Rooms 1 & 2 had apparently no mud so it is likely no mud was used in roof of bldg - only in upper floor where such existed.

May 25& 26th. Continued digging in West Bldg. Finished Room 7, 3rd stratum of mud from upper floor. Fallen hunks of lime plaster probably from upper floor. It probably covered the mud which may have been supported as today by reed matting. Continued digging Room 4. Finished digging 2nd stratum of fallen mud from probable upper floor. In Room 5 a piece of flagging remains in northeast corner - this same fill of mud was found over it as well as over the bed for the stone floor.

As in South Bldg the stone paving must have been yanked out before roof - or here upper floor - fell in. May 27th. Dug W. Bldg. R 4 near door leading to Room 3 - stratum 3 & 3 b. Sherds here under floor level much earlier than those found over floor - many painted. No sign of any even floor - most likely there was pavement here as in Room 6 and pavement was pulled out before upper floor and roof fell in. Tiles found mainly over this floor clay. In Room 7 tiles found mainly over
