Notes on South Building Room 1 - distance between 2 bases in situ - 174.5 cm. Base 1 in situ is northern one. Base 2 in situ is southern one. Eastern face of Base 2 in situ with that side having the same line as the eastern face of block lies along the same line as the eastern face of block this block. East face of base 2 lies 4.5 cm. east of east face of block immediately north of it. Distance between blocks north & south of base 2 is 56 cm. North face of base 1 lies 25 cm. from north end of upper course of stylobate upon which base rests. Base 2 - the top of the eastern face of base 2 lies 28 cm. west of east face of stylobate. The bottom of the east face of west of east face of stylobate. The U on Base 2 lies 32 cm. west of east face of stylobate. The U on top face of Base 2 reads from west. Base 2 from central point upon which centre of drum of column stood as shown by marks on base to east face of stylobate the line of which xx was ascertained by stretching string for 6 along face - is distance of 59. Base 2 same distance.

East face of epistyle to central point where column stood on base 2 is 59, but 60.5 for Base 1: 1.5 cm. difference. West face of base 1 projects 4 cm. west of west face of stylobate. West face of Base 2 is directly over west face of epistyle. Hence if Base 1 is brought in 4 cm. to lie over west face of epistyle Base 2 must go in 1.5 cm. east of west face in order to have columns in line if they are to be placed on their original positions on the base. This was done points of the circles where the columns stood on each were found to be both 29.5 cm. from the west face of the epistyle. Both bases by being raised to the height of the adjacent blocks were made level with each other. 26.7 Base 1 fr. centre circle where column stood to north face 35.3 of base 1 62.0 Base 2 fr. centre of circle where column stood to south face of Base 2. 62.00 & 174.5 (distance between bases) - 236.5, actual intercolumniation.

Distance from south face of north wall of South Building to centre of column circle on Base 2 - 4.76 m. (really 4.80 m.). I measured off 4.76 m. from the south face of the north wall of South Building Room 3 south along west colonnade wall & from this point 4.76 m. from north wall of Building I measured of the intercolumniation of 2.33 existing between Base 1 & 2 of Room 1. And again from this point 2.33 to find that it brought it to the centre of the very most likely place for the basis of the fallen column. Remeasurement June 1, '39. Intercolumniation 2.33. S. face of north wall to centre of 1st column - 2.48 2.48 2.33 1st to 2nd col. intercolumnation 2.33 2-3 2.53 3-4 9.47 fr. south face of north wall brings one to a point about 5 cm. south of most probable place for column base for 4th column - quite clear from looks of stylobate column stood here. See Diary June 2nd 1939.
