KALORIZIKI, TOMB 33 (Lot 87)

NB III, pp. 18, 23

November 8, 1935Continue clearing the dromos of Tomb 33, finding the end, with rough stairs, at the south. On the east side of the dromos opens what is probably a niche (armaraki), closed with unhewed stones above, and baked brick below. Uncover the dromos for a length of five meters, without reaching the end. This tomb is in different rock from that we have yet found in Kalorizki and Mersinoudhkia fields. It is harder, and full of pebbles of various sizes. It looks like ancient river-bottom. According to Christo, Dikaios! earliest tomb was in similar rock. Many sherds (mostly of amphora?) near niche, in dromos fill.

November 9Finish clearing the dromos, save for the strip for stroses, at the end of the day. There is grave fear that the tomb has been plundered, as there is a deep section of disturbed earth to a fair depth, and going within the door. Only in the lower part are the stones closing the door preserved.

Find many fragments of two pots, one an amphora with triangles on the shoulder, the other maybe a barrel jug, with red bands between black ones, in the fill of the dromos, mostly by the armaraki. Some of the sherds of both are actually caught between the stones closing the armaraki.

Across the floor of the dromos by the armaraki are many unworked stones, set with mud, or with decomposed mud brick.

November 11Finish clearing the dromos, and drawing plans.

Photo C 12 of dromos. Start opening the tomb. Due to the looseness of the earth, we have to open the tomb from above. The hard crust of the rock is still in place, with about 20 cm. open beneath it.

November 14The bones of the skeleton are missing above the hips. There are a few fragments scattered around the tomb, but not nearly enough to account for the lack.

The body lay to the right of the door, with its head toward the door, apparently stretched out on its back.
