BAMBOULA
Tr.2 (III:113;2-5-37) Find a change of earth at ca. 60 cm. below the surface, in squares A-Delta. Though not very firm this must be an ancient level. In A it runs out onto the bedrock, but it has been levelled by bringing in earth. In square B we find the fragments of a pithos lying, apparently in situ, on the 0.60 level. Numerous stones around the sherds: two groups, W. and N. may be the tops of lower walls. In square Gamma is a patch of ash, also on this floor, and just north of it is burnt earth. In Delta-E find the top of a wall at [handwritten: ?] running at right angles to wall no.1, and below it. The 0.60 floor must have covered this wall; the floor was not kept here in digging. Photo Bam 7 of central part of trench, cleared to 0.60 level in unit 1. (III:117;3-3-37) Leave trench 2 as itis until some more areas ahve been investigated and we decide whether or not to clean trenches 2&3 as a single area.
(III:117;13-3-37) Recommence work in trench 2, by extending the east extension north and south. We isolate two surface intrusions which were missed when the trench was first dug, They do not go far.
(III:139;16-3-37) The surface in trench 2 as cleared now is 8.18 at the SW, 9.14 at the NE. The stratification of the trench is: 8.18/9.14-8.40/9.35 plowed earth 8.40/9.35-8.63/8.73 (upper only) brown soil, fairly clean. To tos of walls and tumble; in unit 6 and 7 to bed rock.
(III:139;17-3-37) In the NE part of the trench clear to the 9.28- level. There are no walls, but the fragments of a pithos lie on this level in section B of the original tr 2.
(V:117;22-3-38) Start season off with men. Begin by cleaning out earth brought in by rains and by moving track preparatory to moving big dump. Photos Bam 143-154 of tr 2 and site in general.
Trench 2 Unit 1
(III:107;2-5-27) against W. wall, just above level of white floor, but to south of it: coins bronze p.110, no.1
(III:113;3-3-37) clear in unit 1 to the 0.60(9.35) floor. The main floor is made of clayey red earth with white fragments, but it is cut at the east. There the earth is brown; it seems that this cutting has something to do with the pithos, for which no separate Baugrab has yet been discovered. This cutting seems to cut across wall no.1, visible here only by the white clay at the 0.60 floor level. XXXXX XXXXXX XXX XXXX Photo Bam 7 of central part of trench cleared to 0.60 level in unit 1.
