BAMBOULA, TOMB 19 (cont.)
and arm. On its chest is a necklace of objects 26-30, and on the small finger of the right hand there is a ring of bronze.

14 April, 1939The 1.35 burial is placed on a carefully laid pack of stones, to which the big stone in the south, just before the big erect slab, belongs.
Remove the stones. They rest on and in a layer of gritty red earth, entirely without bones, and to judge from the pithos sherds in it, brought from the settlement.
This ends at 1.45 on softer sandy grey earth.

Remove the big southern slab and find a rough wall of masonry behind it. This stops at the same level as the big slab, i.e. just over the main stone fill.

Remove the masonry, revealling the original L.C. II shape of the tomb, before its L.C. III remodelling. The entrance was in the southwest.
The layer of foreign earth found below 1.35 continues below 1.45 in most places, and comes directly upon masses of bones, at 1.80. Only by the door does soft earth reach as high as 1.45. It contains nothing in situ and seems to have silted in.

This level is much higher in the south (to 1.30), where skeletal remains lie among stones.
Skulls XLVII-LI belong to this level.
