TRENCH 21:1,2,3,4,5,10,11,12,15,16,17,18,20,26,29
This area lay close to the surface and was greatly disturbed. In 21:1 most of the area was disturbed to the floor; in 21:2,3,5,10,11, and 16, the upper floors were entirely disturbed. In 21:10 and 11 there is undisturbed earth below the last levels reached. Not enough was dug of 21:15 to merit its inclusion here.
A. The earliest floor levels were found in 21:12 and 21:17. These floors clearly belong with massive foundation cuttings which rise above the floor levels, and continued to be used in later periods. A large block from a polygonal wall found in disturbed earth in 21:18 doubtless belongs to the early walls, whose foundations are the only ones so far discovered capable of holding such a large stone. The earliest recorded floor was that at 7.46 in 21:12. It is of plaster, and has a slight coating of accumulated clay over it. No sherds were found on it, so that the following description begins with the 7.42 floor, the earliest with associated sherds. It is not certain whether the 7.08 floor in 21:17N is contemporary with the 7.42 or the 7.46 floor in 21:12. It is listed with the upper floor, [handwritten: mmm] which it was in any case partly contemporary.
(1) On the lowest floors (save for 21:12, 7.46: see above), and in the material of the second floors. The following are the levels: 21:12, 7.30 to 7.42; 21:17N, mud on 7.08, in line of E-W wall. (2) Two later, and successive stages of L.C.I are represented by the following: (a) 21:12, clay on 7.30 floor. The following sherds were found: 33 1/3% plain 2 sherds White Slip I 5 " Base Ring I 7 " Wash Ware 2 " Thick creamy slip 1 " Rich cream clay, painted 10 " Red Polished 27 decorated sherds (Photo Bam.'59, LI 1) 21:12, 7.25 floor: 7.25 to 7.50. The sherds (b) 21:12, in material of 7.25 floor: 7.25 to 7.50. The sherds were the following: 42% plain 1 sherd R.L.III 2 " Wash Ware 5 " Red Polished 8 decorated sherds (c) The pottery in 21:17S belongs to a late stage of L.C.I, with a few L.C.II sherds. The first meter of the deposit was disturbed in modern times. From 1.00m. to the bottom the following sherds were found:
