Supplementary Notes
The Hearth area of Area E: This underlies in part, at least, House VIII. There was no evidence an earlier house under House VIII. A portion of the 9.46 floor was removed, yielding only plain wares, including five sherds of PWM II. The 9.46 floor was superimposed over a firm level at 9.50. Below this level, the first which may be associated with House VIII, was found a fill of gritty red earth going to about 9.65. (See Stratum C:4) This appears to be part of a general fill in the area of House VIII, continuing to the East and Southeast of it, and antedating, of course, its construction.
A. Material from the footing trenches of House. VIII. 8. All the sherds and objects in this level presumably come from under the general fill and thus date to the period when this region was in use as a factory. Also among the finds was a hanging lamp fragment.
B. Ashy level at 9.72. The sherds associated with this level, lying just under the general fill give the date of the latest activity in the hearth area.
C. Contents of a trial pit sunk below 9.72 to 10.20
D. Contents of a trial pit sunk below 10.20 into a mixed layer of unusual clays: green, red-brown and deep gray.
E. Sherds found in and around a hearth isolated at 9.87
Daniel described the excavation of this area as follows: "The pure ---- real floor"
In 1954 a short campaign .... - greatest expansion."
Trench 20:15 b-e. The campaign of 1954 had as its object not only the hearth area but to determine whether the settlement continued in this area south and . southeast of House VIII. "Except for the cutting ... just below the dromos." See Stratum A (1). Perhaps closely connected with these are the sherds of S^r 1 : the fill behind the wall. Owing to the ruinous condition of the tomb its original shape could not be perfectly determined. "It had an offset dromos - - - destroyed or collapsed." S^r (2) : sherds in a layer of light red-brown earth containing scattered stones + sealing off the wall, fallen mud bricks and fill behind the wall of 20:15 b S^r (3) : Fill of the second destroyed Tomb in 20:15 b. This also contained a saddle quern.
