Area E Daniel House V (E, VIII)

The stratification of house V presents no serious problems. House V is subsequent to house III, to level 1 of house IV, and to the L.C.II fill under E.V.5. The construction of house V is dated by the foundation trenches for its walls, and material of the floors. The next step chronologically is represented by levels 2-4 of house IV, which mark its destruction, by the immediately subsequent rebuilding of the eastern wall of E.V.3, and by the earth of level 3 (of house V), on which the new wall lies. The last occupation of house V is dated by the sherds found on its floors. There was little accumulated earth on the floors, such as was often found in other houses. Building debris varying in depth from 0.20 to 0.70m. lay directly over the floors.

1) The deep fill found between 8.28 and 8.66 under E.V.5 antedates the construction of house V. It contained the following sherds: 70% plain 12 PWM II 1 sherd L.H.IIIA:2/B 1 " White Slip II 2 " Base Ring 2 " Wash ware 5 " Red Polished 11 decorated sherds

2) The construction of the house is dated by the following levels: a) Foundation trenches of the north and south walls of E.V.3, of the east wall of E.V.2, of the west wall of E.V.2, and of the south wall of the house, cut through the street. The sherds are the following: 70% plain 1 sherd Bowl ware 2 sherds White Slip II 3 sherds Shaved Ware 1 Sherd Monochrome 7 decorated sherds. b) Material of the floors was excavated in E.V.1, between 8.25 and 8.38, and in E.V.3, between 8.26 and 8.27. The following sherds were found:
