Trench 20:15 b-e

The fill of the second destroyed tomb contained a saddle quern

and the following sherds:

89% plain (incl. 15 PWM II) 3 sherds WS II 1 " Myc. III 2 " LC III Dec. 6 " w-m buccher o with red wash

Sherd bag cards: 20:15b From top of braxos cutting to 35.cm.; do. Upper part of braxos cutting 35 to ca. 75 cm. below uppermost part of cutting; do., lower part of braxos cutting below ca. 75 cm.

Two deep pits, almost certainly tombs originally, but thoroughly destroyed, were found at a short remove to the southeast of House [handwritten: VIII] W.9 and 10.

Also in the general area (of high bedrock) between these destroyed tombs and the two previously described were found a number of shallow depressions, some round, some square, which may have served as receptacles for sacrifices in connection with the tombs. These completely destroyed tombs, as well as the depressions, were all filled in deliberately. Taken together, the sherd material from the destroyed tombs is:

97% plain (incl. 30 PWM II) 3 sherds LC III Dec.

In view of the persistent evidence from all quarters of the area excavated in 1954, one cannot escape the conclusion that there was a general effort at the end of LC IIC, to level off the "factory" district and disused tombs near it. [handwritten: mud in beginning of the LCIIA period]

The reason for this, however, cannot be guessed, except in the restricted area over which House V.8 was built, since there is no evidence of re-use of the area. Was it a street or a square?
