eastern end of tomb 17 (B.M.,T.53) to the well in trench 19 (B.M.,T.104) is 14 meters; on the plan it is 0.015, giving a scale of 1:935. From the western side of the well (B.M.,T.104) to the western side of tomb 26 (B.M.,T.50) is 23.25 m.; on the plan it is 0.036, at a scale of 1:646. From the southern side of tomb 17A (B.M.,T.102) to the road, in a line perpendicular to the road, the southern edge of the road, is 54 meters.; the plan shows 0.0315, or a scale of 1:1390. From the southern edge of tomb 26 (B.M.,T.50) to the road is 23.70 m.; the plan, with 0.0lm., has a scale of 1:2570. From the northern side of tomb 17 (B.M.,T.53) to the center of the threshing floor on the top of the hill is 78 meters. The plan shows approximately 0.085 m., or a scale of 1:910. From the northern edge of the outcropping east of tomb 17 (B.M.,T.53) to the junction of the two roads at the western end of Bamboula is 161 meters. The plan has 0.156 m., again a scale of 1:910. From the center of the threshing floor to the road is 126 meters. The plan, with 0.09, has a scale of 1:1400.
The scale between different points on the map in Exc.Cyp. varies between 1:646 and 1:2570. Neither the natural features of the hill nor the tombs are at consistent scales. That two measurements of 1:910 [handwritten: due?] are to the same scale/is probably a coincidence, particularly so as one of the measurements involves the center of the threshing floor, which can only be approximated on the British Museum map. The measurements between the tombs seem more nearly accurate than those of the contours of the hill, though they too fall wide of the mark. It may be that the tombs were plotted free-hand on the site, without the notation of the features of the hill, and that these were added at a later date with increased inaccuracy.
Our immediate concern with the above maligned map is to determine the extent of the cemetery south of Area E. [handwritten: Tombs 50,51,41,45,46,47, 48,51,89,90,91,92,93,94,100, and 101, which particularly concern us, occupy a rectangle 0.041 x 0.052 m. on the map. If our task were to occupy a rectangle 0.041 x 0.052 m. on the map.]
