AREA A STRATUM B

All the levels discussed under stratum A are earlier than stratum B, and a all levels of stratum C are later. The following sub-periods were distinguished within stratum B:

B(1) Ashy accumulation was found over the B floor in A.III.2. The sherds were very thick in the small area that it was possible to clear. 30% plain [handwritten: pithoi and a few handmade] 25 sherds White Slip II [handwritten: 2 with tree design] 11 " Base Ring 4 " Red Polished [handwritten: (one incised)] 40 decorated sherds

B(2) Undisturbed building debris of period B was found only in A.II.1. It contained only the following sherds: 6 sherds plain [handwritten: 2 pithoi, 4 handmade coous] 1 " Wash ware [handwritten: (or Bamboula ware pithoi)] 1 decorated sherd

B(3) The following sherds come from the region between house A.III and the circuit wall. Although this earth was dug in many different levels, these appear to be caused by silting, and not to correspond to the strata noted within the houses. The deposit undoubtedly covers the periods of both strata A and B, but it seemed advisable not to attempt an artificial subdivision. All this material antedates the refuse of stratum B(5), which lies in part over it.

75% plain (G23) [handwritten: pithoi and handmade with a few cooking pots] 5 sherds L.H.III (Sh534 low in deposit; 519,520 high in deposit) [handwritten: + one III B(C)] 1 " L.H.III, coarse tempered [handwritten: one not found] 82 " White Slip II 2 " White Slip I 56 " Base Ring (Sh535; two with white paint) 46 " Wash ware 4 " Burnished Slip [handwritten: Bamboula ware] 6 " Monochrome 1 " Red on Black 1 " Black Slip 27 " Red Polished, etc. 231 decorated sherds

B(4) The material over the stratum B floor in A.III.4 and in the foundation trenches and among the leveling courses of walls VI, VII, and VIII immediately precedes the construction of house III, some of it may be as late as the last date from the construction of house III. While much of the sherd material must days before the construction of house IV' of stratum C. The sherds are:
