East wall of exedra 5.
This wall (Film 168 -3 & 4) is like the east and west walls of exedra 1, 2, 3, and 4. There is a difference however, in its foundation and it has only single course of ashlar work. The wall has been cleared to bedrock on its east face from 2.30 m. to 7.55 m. and from 14.00 m. to 14.65 m. north of the south face of the south wall, and on the west face from 5.00 m. to 6.20 m. north. Where examined its foundation reaches down to bedrock (diagram fig. ). It is in rubble like that of the other exedra walls but the top has a levelling course in roughly worked stones which project irregularly from the east and west face of the wall ( Film 168- nos. 3 and 4). Their height varies between 0.12 m. and 0.30 m.; and their length, between 0.37 m. and 0.62 m.
Over this foundation is a single course in ashlar blocks measuring, with one exception, between 1.15 m. and 1.67 m. in length. They extend through the thickness of the wall of approximately 0.55 m. The exception is an ashlar block measuring 0.13m. in length and 0.50 m. in thickness. The wall above this course was in rough masonry which is (Film 168-3). At the north preserved to a maximum height of +0.41 m. (Film 168-3&4). end the top of the last ashlar block is 0.07 m. lower than the top of the course immediately to the south of it in order to bring the top of the threshold block which it supports to the desired level of +0.09 m.
During the construction of the wall at this end the builders cut through a floor in lime concrete which belonged to the building whose west wall of the South Building (see above, p. ; plan fig. ; and Film 168-6 & 7). The builders also below p. removed at this point a wall of this earlier building which was an impediment in their way and which ran from west to east along the south edge of the concrete floor. The lime concrete of the floor is contiguous
