West wall of Exedra 1. 17

This wall is very much like the east wall (see above [handwritten: P.]). The east face has been cleared down to bedrock from 10.10 m. to 13.10 m. north of the south face of the south wall [handwritten: (Film 167-24-26); and the] The west face, [handwritten: has been cleared to bedrock] from 0.54 m. to 6.50 m. north, and from 15.30 m. to the north wall [handwritten: (Plan, fig.4)]. From the south end to 0.54 m. north the wall is founded on a stratum of hard compact red undisturbed soil at an average level of -2.07 m. [handwritten: at level -2.23 m] From 0.80 m. to 1.50 m. north it is founded on an earlier wall [handwritten: for which see plan (fig.2)]. Elsewhere, wherever cleared, it is founded on bedrock. For levels one is referred to the diagram [handwritten: 2] (fig. ). The foundation course, which is in rubble composed of stones averaging about double fist size with an occasional somewhat larger stone [handwritten: boulders / large stones]. Course 1 consists of a course of ashlar blocks from [handwritten: portico] 1.30 m north to the north wall measuring, where cleared between 1.06 m. and 1.21 m. in length. Their width occupies the thickness of the wall of approximately 0.55 m. From the south wall to 1.30 m. north in this course, and to 1.02 m. north in the course above it [handwritten: probably] the wall consists of rough masonry. This was to fill in the [handwritten: distance which remained to be constructed] remaining gap between the south end of the ashlar work of the west wall and the south wall. One of the stones which filled this gap is bonded into the south wall projecting about 0.10 m. south of the line of its north face between two larger blocks in the south wall.

Course 2 from 1.02 m. north to the north wall consists of ashlar blocks measuring, where cleared, from 1.00 m. to 1.72 m. in length. Their width takes up the thickness of the wall.

Course 3 is extant from 1.30 m. north to the north wall.

Like one and two it consists of ashlar blocks taking up the thickness of the wall and measuring from 0.47 m. to 1.77 m. in length.
