sherds among those decorated (about 10% out of 17%). Since the latest ware in the deposit belongs to the Cypro-Geometric III period, the terminus ante quem is about 700 B.C. Thus, as far as the context is concerned, it appears that Sh 615 could range in date from the Late Bronze Age to the eighth century B.C. But these cannot be conclusive termini because the deposit does not appear to have been a sealed one.
The context of Sh 615 has been presented in detail in view of the possible importance of this fragment. However, even if the deposit [handwritten: had] been sealed, it would be difficult to date its lower limit more than roughly because one cannot necessarily guarantee a distinction between Cypro- Geometric III and Cypro-Archaic I pottery classifications from sherds alone. Whole shapes and contexts are needed for real certainty. More evidence must therefore be forthcoming before we believe that the practice of rolling matrices on pithoi existed in Cyprus from 75-100 years prior to the first reported instances elsewhere. The fact that the practice of making rolled impressions on pithoi is attested for the Late Bronze Age at Cypriote sites, but not at Greek sites, may lend a certain credence to the idea that the custom was first revived in Cyprus.
