-3- 18. PEFQ (1934) 90. 19. AJA 42 (1938) 266 Fig. 5 The height of the fragment is 6.3 cm., its width 10.2 cm. and its thickness 1.9 cm. The height of the representation is 2.3 cm.; its length, giving the circumference of the seal, is 3 cm. requiring a diameter of .96 cm. It was found in Area A, Level B:5, which is assigned to the Late Cypriote IIB period, 1350-1275 B.C. in Daniel's tentative chronological system, [handwritten: explained in AJA 45 (1941) 271. Some revision of this chronology may be necessary in the final publication but it is adequate for the present purpose.]

21.Published by E.Porada, AJA 52 (1948) 178 ff. [handwritten: A more] complete analysis of this material, by the same writer, will appear in the final report of the excavation.

Abh. (Heidelberg 1922) 88, with further references. The motif is most popular in the Middle Kingdom. It occurs seldom in the New Kingdom and offers fewer points for comparison. Cf. L.Klebs, same series: 9.Abh. (Heidelberg 1934) 67, with references.

26.E.g. L.Borchardt, Das Grabdenkmal des Königs Sa Hu-Re II. (Leipzig 1913) Blatt 5. The position, of course, became well known in the whole Egyptian world, cf. G.Loud, Megiddo Ivories (Or. Inst. Studies No. 52.) Chicago 1939 Pl.4.
27.The position superficially suggests Kuhblasen, but this, of course, is excluded by the sex of the animal. Though apparently not documented for ancient times this custom is referred to as a genuinely Hamitic practice: H. Baumann, Völkerkunde von Afrika (Essen 1940) 90-91. I owe this reference to Mr. R.Dyson of the Museum staff.
