July 25, 1983Dear Bob:

With reference to your letter of June 20 on Cyprus publications. Greg had this typed up in your absence and sent it to me.

I see no particular problem in postponing the financing of the following undertakings:

1.Herscher, Lapithos

2.Herscher, Cypriote objects in UM collections

3.Megaw, The Basilica

These authors do not seem likely to require financial assistance during the present calendar year. I wrote myself to Herscher about her second publication, in fact, and have received no response.

About the following I do feel some concern about postponing:

4. Rupp, David, The "Palace" and its mosaics

You recall that he was here in the spring and that Spyro, he and I discussed his project with you. At that time he gave me lists of additional material (copies of drawings, special xeroxes of notebooks, prints of field photographs etc.) which he felt he still needed in order to progress with his work. Of the 350.00 which you allocated to me I spent 320.00 toward his requests. There remain to be done the following:

119 5 x 7" enlargements of field photographs @ 3.00 357.00 145 xeroxes of notebook pages ca. 100.00 (to be done outside since UM xerox machines do not print light blue ink)

I advise that he seems to be the only one who shows any signs of life -- to the extent, at any rate, of asking for necessary material for study. It would be a pity, it seems to me, to have to refuse this since we have put him on the spot to produce so we can resume excavation in Cyprus! Let me know if you can see any light.

Frances F. Jones: Ayios Ermoyennis:

You enquire why she was not included in my list of requests for financing. The answer is quite simple. She has never asked for any funds for her work and so far as I know she has done no work on her project for 20-odd years. I think she has long planned to defer it until after her retirement from the Princeton Art Museum which will take place in 1984. Whence her projected date of 1985-85 for the undertaking.
