UNIVERSITY INTRAMURAL CORRESPONDENCE MUSEUM

TO: G. Roger Edwards FROM: Robert H. Dyson, Jr. [handwritten: signature] IN RE: Cyprus Publications DATE: 20 June 1983

I inadvertantly clipped all of the Cyprus allocation requests together and then responded only to the top one. Prior to making the allocation review I wrote to each of the people concerned to ascertain what their intentions were in terms of timing. I have some of these in hand and they have been of considerable help in guiding the evaluation of both our Cypriot program and the general priorities for the Museum's publications program as well.

My priorities for this year have been: 1) to purchase the word processing equipment for publications, this includes a terminal that will provide access out of business by supporting them through a critical period of evaluation and restructuring, 3) to continue active field projects so that we can regain some of our lost publication of major field projects so that we can regain some of our lost credibility with our colleagues, 5) support other catch-up publications and analyses. The publications expense is a major one-time investment which I feel we must make. This has meant that I have had very few financial resources to support the work in category 5.

I have been in touch with Ellen Herscher about Lapithos. Until she and I can discuss the details of publication I think it best to put this to rest without funding for 1983.

I have another letter from Francis James concerning Ermoyenis material which indicates an intention to work intensively on it in 1984-85. Once again I think financing should be put off for the moment; at least until Francis' work is well along and we can see an end to the writing. (This work seems not to be on your list of requests?)

For the moment I think it is going to best for us to let all of the Cyprus matters rest. In 1984 we will have recovered from one of our major investments and can look at the state of work on this important series of projects. Meanwhile I will leave the $350 on the books for Kourion. I hope to hear from all of the authors involved in this work by the early Fall so that our plans can be made with all of our obligations in mind.

Cheers.
