accidental finds that had been published, the sites listed in the Cyprus Survey10 and in the Registry of the Archaeological Museum in Kouklia as well as the sites discovered by the CPSP in 1979, 1980 and 1982. Seven hundred and sixty-seven sites or findspots were entered into the computerized database.11 In addition, two hundred and forty-one monasteries, churches and chapels as well as the modern villages were entered based on information obtained from topographical and cadastral maps. For each site or find information was recorded on its geographical location using UIM grid references, topographical setting, extent, artifact classes found, periods of occupation, functions and land-use. The sites can be plotted on a 1:50,000 or 1:250,000 scale computer generated map of western Cyprus selecting for such cultural variables as chronological period, function or size and/or for environmental variables such as topography, geomorphology, pedology or hydrology. Computer-assisted spatial analysis of the data can also be performed. This archaeological resource inventory will provide the CPSP researchers and other scholars with an invaluable tool to aid them in their investigations of the archaeological remains in the CPSP study zone in particular and southwestern Cyprus in general.
The third field season of the CPSP was conducted in July and August, 1983. During the thirty-two days in the field the field crews12 surveyed 107 km2. The primary aims of the field season were two-fold. The first aim was to create two large contiguous blocks of territory in the CPSP study area which had been surveyed in the same extensive fashion (Fig. 2). The larger of these two block stretches across the coastal plain and lower portions of the Ezousas, Xeros, Dhiarizos and Khapotami River drainages from Yeroskipos past Kouklia. The smaller block is in the upper Ezousas drainage in the area of Kritou Marottou, Kannaviou and Ayios Dimitrianos. The principal reason for creating these large blocks of uniformly surveyed territory is so that various
