Dear Roger:
Here is some information for the Ayios Ermogennis project:
Manuscript (standard 8½ x 11, double-spaced):
Rough draft, summarizing excavation, describing pits and tombs 143 pp. Discussion of finds (to be done) 50+? Abbreviations, bibliography, etc. 2+? 200+?
Illustrations:
Plans and cross-sections. Scales included, so reduction flexible. Ratio 4:3. Most are 24" x 18"; some are oversize, but probably can be turned 90° if reduction seems too much for legibility. Average four figures to a page? Present working sheets 8½" x 11". Mostly 1:1 scale. Probably will be arranged more efficiently and probably can be reduced and/or rearranged to conform to format. Average six figures to a page?
Profiles of pottery. Probably 42+ figs.
Photographs of excavated areas and of objects (to be worked on). 26+?
When I come on Tuesday, I would like to go through the study-photographs that you have on file and see whether there are any additional ones that need to be printed. I have my own lists, made from notebook references. I also have references to photographs of objects found elsewhere in Curium that might be useful comparanda. Please don't bother to get anything out in advance -- most of the day may be spent on documentation etc.
If there is time, I would also like to have at least a quick look at the material from Tombs 1 and 5. Please don't bother to get anything out in advance -- most of the day may be spent on documentation etc.
It would be helpful to have a chance to talk with your editor about format, if she is free, so I can organize illustrations constructively as I go along.
Since it is difficult at this stage to be specific about drafting and photographing, would it be possible to put in a request for a certain number of hours of work in order to get some sort of budget? Drafting involves minor addenda to plans and elevations; inking of profiles. Presumably you have a map of Cyprus that can be used to show the location of the site. And do you have a drawing on linen, but the original plan of the cemetery? (I have a few additions in pencil that it apparently is a copy; it has a few additions in pencil that should be inked, if it is to be used.) The amount of photography needed can only be an educated guess at this stage; perhaps I can be a bit less vague after Tuesday's visit.
A bientôt!
