May 19, 1983Dear Peter:

Your letter of March 26 to Bob Dyson, our Director, was referred to me for information about the "Mint".

As I recall, this was discovered in the course of Joe Last's waterworks investigations on the Acropolis. We do not have the records of what he did or found. Perhaps these were turned over to the Cyprus Museum and can be found there?

At any rate we do have D. H. Cox's account of her work and finds. Her diary is written in rather light pencil and the text, which I send you, complete, has been reproduced and somewhat improved in legibility in Xerox. I enclose a note which I supplied for the Director with regard to the publications.

Whatever coins Joe found cannot now be isolated. For those which DHC found there are coin numbers in the text and I enclose our pertinent coin lists on which numbers are reserved for her coins: their identification, however, has not been filled in. The coins themselves, of course, remained in Cyprus, and could, I presume, be found by number and identified. She may indeed have put their identities on the envelopes. She does in fact give a general summary of them in her publication.

That seems to be the extent of our information. Her neutral opinion as to whether or not it was a mint appears on p. 35 of her diary.

With all good greetings to you and Elektra -

Sincerely,

G. Roger Edwards Keeper of Collections Mediterranean Section
