I have known Diana Buitron for a number of years. She is a first-rate person and scholar in whom I have every confidence.

I am well acquainted with her work at Kourion in Cyprus. Excavations of the Sanctuary of Apollo at Kourion were originally conducted under the auspices of the University Museum, Philadelphia, of whose staff I have been a member since 1950. On the death of the chief excavator, George E. McFadden, in 1953 I spent a year there winding up affairs and initiating the final publication project of the excavations. Since then I have been in charge of the publication program of the excavations of the University Museum at Kourion in general and in all aspects.

Although the University Museum is no longer actively or formally concerned with the excavations there I have been in touch with Diana Buitron frequently ever since the beginning of her work at the Sanctuary of Apollo, and have supplied her with copies of our excavation records, drawings, photographs etc. and she in turn has sent me reprints of her articles as the excavatios progressed.

Miss Buitron's quality and high qualification for her undertaking cannot be over-emphasized. Her account of her past and proposed activities in her application is lucid and convincing of the value of her work there. The University Museum's excavations there produced the main outlines of the sanctuary and its major buildings. The work of Miss Buitron and her colleagues has been developing the deeper aspects of the cult to which the sanctuary was devoted. Her own acumen and her choice of colleagues will, I am sure, result in very meaningful contributions to our knowledge of this famous sanctuary and the character of its cult.

Miss Buitron publishes promptly and effectively, an aspect which is certainly worthy of congratulation, and, needless to say, emulation. I am sure you will be gratified with the results she will achieve with the aid of your grant.

I cannot speak of Mr. Lowell Edmunds since I am not familiar with his work.
