NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES WASHINGTON, D.C. 20506

Dear Colleague:

I am writing to request your evaluation of the enclosed proposal which has been submitted to the General Research Program. The purpose of this program is to support original research in all areas of the humanities. We encourage collaborative projects or projects from individual scholars that require a level of support beyond that which could be provided by a fellowship. Archaeology projects are funded in the Program as well as projects involving the study of a community, state or region. The Program also supports conferences which are designed to advance research in one or more humanities fields, and we administer the Endowment's "Science, Humanities, Science and Technology program (formerly, "Science, Technology and Human Values"), which supports collaborative research between humanities scholars and scientists on issues in this area. A general description of this NEH interest is enclosed as a supplement to the General Research Program guidelines.

I realize that your time is valuable and that this request may not reach you at an opportune moment. Let me apologize for being unable to compensate you for your services or to contact you in advance before requesting this review. We are required to solicit well over 3000 such reviews annually. We are able to meet this demand with a small staff and budget thanks to the good will and cooperation of colleagues such as yourself. In the past the quality of reviews has been very high, demonstrating the concern of professionals for maintaining standards and determining priorities in each field.

If you are able to comply with this request, please type your comments on the enclosed rating sheet and return it in the envelope provided. Your comments should respond to these questions: 1) Is the proponent aware of the field and is the proponent's relevant scholarship and pertinent resources? 2) Is the research design adequate? 3) Are the qualifications of the work proposed? Please comment also if the project budget fails to describe reasonable personnel appropriate to the demands of the work proposed? Please anticipated costs. In summarizing your evaluation, please indicate whether you feel that the project as proposed merits a public subsidy.

Upon an applicant's request, we furnish the content of the evaluations but we do not reveal the names of the reviewers. To protect the applicant's privacy in regard to salaries or personal plans, we ask that you destroy the application after you have read it. Your signature on the rating sheet will indicate your consent to this procedure. A space is provided at the bottom of the rating sheet for your suggestions of colleagues who would also be qualified to assess the project. We hope that you will … continues
