1 December 1982Professor G. Roger Edwards The University Museum 33rd and Spruce Streets Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Dear Professor Edwards,
In May, 1981, M. Antoine Hermary of the French Archaeological Mission at Amathus, Cyprus, excavated the head of a young boy sculpted in marble. M. Hermary is preparing his publication of the piece, and has asked my help in obtaining information about a similar head found by George McFadden at Kourion. McFadden mentions the "fine head of a youth, somewhat fragmentary but full of life and expression" in his report, AJA 55(1951), p. 168, no. 4. x
I believe I have studied all the marble sculptures in the Kourion House Museum and apotheke, as well as those from the Limassol and Nicosia museums and their reserves, and I have not seen a head that meets this description. Do you remember the excavation of the piece, or better yet, do you know its current disposition? During my recent visit to the Glencairn Museum, David Romano informed me that there are some marble sculptures from Kourion at the University Museum. Could this head be among them? It would be nice to be able to provide M. Hermary with such comparanda for his very fine piece.
At any rate, I would be very interested to see your sculptures from Kourion, should you be so kind as to grant me that privilege. When I last saw you, during that amazing snowstorm in Princeton, I don't think we had a moment to discuss my study of the Hellenistic sculpture from Cyprus. I was so grateful to you for giving me a ride and saving me from battling the blizzard on foot that I didn't want to further burden you with my Cypriot queries and plans. My dissertation on Hellenistic portraiture in Cyprus goes well, and I am greatly enjoying my work here with the Cesnola Collection.
I look forward to seeing you, surely at the meetings at the end of this month. With my every best wish, I am
Yours sincerely,
Joan Breton Connelly
