Dear Roger,

Your two recent letters came during yet another hectic academic term for me. My silence for the past year and more has been unintentional. Since my return from my sabbatical the demands on my time have increased beyond belief. The result has been little progress being made on a wide variety of tasks, the Kourion mosaics for one.

While in Greece and Cyprus in 1980/81 I made significant progress on the study of the mosaics but at the same time various things frustrated my work. One was the drawings. The draughtsman while brilliant was unreliable and irresponsible. It took a great deal of time and agony to get the drawings I had contracted for which didn't come until I returned to Canada last fall. Even then one of the basic drawings never was produced. The other major problem were the notebooks. They are in general horrendous for what I am attempting to do. Much needed information is missing and other information is ambiguous. The xeroxes I have are very difficult to read since they appear to have been written in pencil. I also need to have almost all of the notebooks xeroxed not just the parts referring directly to the mosaics. The reason for this is that there are many crucial references to information in the missing parts. Since the notebooks make little effort to put the specific excavation into a larger picture I would like to have a copy of B.H. Hill's (and his successor's) general notebooks on the excavation which is referred to in my notebooks. This may solve some of the questions that I have concerning my mosaics.

My pen has not been totally silent on the mosaics, the enclosed xerox is my contribution to the new guide book to the antiquities of the British Sovereign Base Area prepared by Laina Swiny. I am also thinking of submitting a paper proposal for the meeting of the North American branch of A.I.E.M.A. to be held in Princeton from 29 April to 1 May.

As for the money, I have only received as far as I can tell $2150 in late 1979 or early 1980. I do not think a cheque for $650 was ever sent to me. Enclosed is an accounting of how I spent the money I did receive.
