November 14, 1978Dr. G. Roger Edwards, The University Museum, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pa. 19104, U.S.A.

Dear Dr. Edwards:

I am happy to hear that my financial request for the completion of Eustolios complex arrived in time for your preliminary discussions with the powers that be. Now to your questions.

First, while much of the money will be needed during my sabbatical, the money for the drawings will be needed as soon as the drawings are finished since the draftsman is now working on them in anticipation of payment. The cost for this work might well be higher than estimated since I do not know exactly how much time will be required to complete them. I may need some of the money in the 1979/80 academic year if I am able to reorder my research plans to allow me to work on the project.

Second, the request covers my anticipated financial needs in order to produce a final manuscript which can be submitted to a publisher. The type of publication I am aiming for is one that is similar to those recently published for the mosaics from some of the Tunisian sites. Would the University Museum be interested in publishing the work?

The financial request covers only the mosaics of Eustolios complex (including the baths). The publication of the architecture of the complex is another project which will require additional research and financial resources. The same is true of the House of the Achilles mosaics. To include the architecture in the proposed publication would only delay its appearance in print. I also will not have the time in the next three years to work on the architecture.
