American School of Classical Studies Odos Souidias 54 Athens 140, Greece
August 9, 1978Dear Roger:
Not in Athens yet, but I will be in four days and until September 30, so thought I'd give that as the return address and ask again that you acknowledge receipt of this part of the text to the ASCS.
Have yours of July 24th and 29th, the latter having arrived this morning. As you suspected, your every wish has been anticipated and herewith are the chapter on Area E and the Conclusions, the latter not quite finished, but I hope to be able to round this out in Athens, where it will be easier to get at the comparative material. I anticipate about 5 pages more.
You touch a sore spot with mention of the location of objects and to Benson. Yes, that would be nice, but one has to have Benson in order to be able to do it and I don't, nor is a copy available to me here in Jerusalem. Since I have never been sent copies of any of Jack's publications on Bamboula, I've had to do without them and get to see them when and where I could. I've managed, but it would have been most helpful, and might even have encouraged the work, if copies had been sent to me. Anyway, these can be added later, for the text I have has the excavation register numbers and these can be translated into Benson's publication numbers.
Again, I've done with what illustrations I had with me; will add others when I get back to Missouri and see what is awaiting me there. The original plans are also there and will need some small additions or changes.
Sorry Preface page 4 got stuck to the original and is sent herewith. Area A - page 7: should read walls VII and VIII. The last I was deleted with Korec-type, which didn't delete on the copy. I have not proof read, since this is not final copy, but just a record of progress thus far and a safety precaution while I'm travelling.
Hope this is a good a sedative as I think it is, but you've already struggled through more than half, so courage and thanks.
Yours.
