May 5, 1978Dear Saul:

I am sending you today the xeroxes of Bamboula vols. IV - IX. Those of Book III will follow shortly. We have been delayed with these because of shortage of secretarial help and then having trouble with reproducing the light blue ink in which much of the diaries is written. For the former our Thursday night "Mummy Dusters" came to the rescue. For the latter we had to go to the Xerox Reproduction Center for the solution of the difficulty.

For the photographs the news is not good, I am sorry to say. I have hunted high and low and am able to come up with none of the negatives you requested. I did find prints of one VG roll and am having them copied. The prints of these will follow.

Negs. of 1937 phots. in list not found Negs. of 1938 phots. in list also not found Note in film list: "In the 1938 season the following individual shots or whole rolls were not given Bam. numbers. Roll J, no. 11 ... Q,R,S,T,U,V,W,X,Y entire." Negs. of 1941 (VG) phots. not found. Prints of one roll (1-43) turned up. Will copy (as above)

The counsel of desperation is that perhaps these negatives were destroyed in the war. George McFadden before the war sent all his negatives to London to a firm there. The idea being that the firm would store them and make prints whenever George requested them. George's pre-war films were all lost in the blitz. It is possible that, since the ones in which you are interested are all pre-war, that Pete may have done the same, with the same result. This would account for your not having received these prints in the earlier years of your involvement.

I gather that you are involved with Tell Anafa this summer. I hope this material will reach you in time so you can use it there if you wish.

Yours,
