MINISTRY OF COMMUNICATIONS & WORKS

DEPARTMENT OF ANTIQUITIES NICOSIA

10th February, 1977Dear Demitri,

Dr. Edwards has sent to me a copy of the letters which you have exchanged with regard to the publication of the mosaics of Kourion. You are no doubt aware of the golden rules that exist among archaeologists and that if an excavation is not published - even if the excavation may date to a distant past, the excavator or the Institution which sponsored the excavation have the right to publish or yield this right to somebody else. I regret more than anybody else that the publication of Kourion has taken so long and I had the opportunity to stress this to all concerned. But now that the opportunity arises for the Pennsylvania University Museum to publish the mosaics of Kourion I do not think that a state of antagonism or polemics should be created. I advise you to get in touch directly with Dr. Rupp, a very reasonable young scholar. He is coming to Cyprus next summer. I am sure that you could find a solution by which your work could be accommodated with full credit in a joint publication.

I am sending a copy of this letter to Dr. Edwards, asking him to advise Dr. Rupp in a similar way.

Yours sincerely,
