THE UNIVERSITY MUSEUM UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA 33RD & SPRUCE STREETS, PHILADELPHIA 4
January 4, 1956Dear Saul,
I commissioned Rodney to give you a message at the conference but as I now discover he forgot it, I shall do it by letter. You have gathered anyway that the portions of the MS I hoped to get to you at the meeting were not quite ready to send. They are now, however, with the exception of the typing of the summary which I hope to get done this week. This, in any case, should make it possible to mail off the entire lot by the end of the week.
There are a few comments in explanation:
1. The material is in what I conceive to be final form with the exception of possible minor changes for oversights, mistakes, etc. which might be caught later, plus the substitution of final catalog numbers for all finds mentioned in the text. It might conceivably be necessary to expand the summary a little. In regard to the numbers I have decided on the following system, after consultation with our cataloguing department here. All the objects in the catalog will get a consecutive publication number, B-1 to B-? for Bamboula, and K-1 to K-? for Kaloriziki. A sample entry in the catalog would then give publication number, field number and museum number, e.g., B-1 (P 560; 49-12-7) Tomb 5:3 etc. A concordance at the end willgive: P 560 (B-1; 49-12-7).
2. On p.45 I have alluded to the megaron (squatters) in the hope that you are dealing with this somewhere. Is this to be the case? I have nothing to contribute to this question from the stratification angle. On the same page I have referred to your expected comments on the mathematical regularity of the house plans in Area 4.E
3. In the summary I have proposed a figure to show the incidence of wares in graphic form. However, in spite of our conversation about this subject, I have been unable to lay my hands on a publication which would give a sample or prototype. Would you mind supplying again a specific reference?
4. Under same cover I am returning the files on Areas C,D and E with the exception of pp.1-5 of Area E which deal with the necropolis and which I shall need when writing up a general discussion of the Tombs. If you particularly need these let me know and I'll see what can be done about it.
5. The stratification charts of which you are receiving a photostat have undergone a few minor corrections in the meantime but no serious changes, so this should not hinder you.
6. As you will be able to determine I have kept to Daniel's arrangement and ideas throughout Areas A-D, altering only where it was really necessary. I have, of course, largely adapted his MS, but in a few cases quoted directly. For Area E I felt obliged to create a new format; likewise, in relegating certain
