DEPARTMENT OF ANTIQUITIES NICOSIA
3rd September, 1954Dear [handwritten: Roger]
I write to confirm the arrangements made on my visit to Episkopi yesterday.
(1) I hope to arrange for J.S. Last's appointment as Hon. Curator, Curium, with effect from 1st September.
(2) The Department will take over responsibility for Curium house and its contents on 12th September, the day you move to Nicosia. Before leaving you will hand over keys to J.S. Last and he will give you a receipt attached to an inventory of the furniture and equipment which your expedition is leaving in the house, and outbuildings (this should include the tools etc. at present at Apollo, which Christo offered to list). Two other copies of this inventory (1 for J.S. Last and 1 for us) will be required. The terms on which the Department is taking over this furniture etc. from the Pennsylvania University Museum have yet to be arranged.
(3) Christos Gregoriou will assume duty as Custodian Curium house on 12th September receiving the keys from J.S. Last and taking responsibility for the furniture etc. by signing a taking-over statement on J.S. Last's copy of the inventory. He will be paid daily wages 14/6 per day for the rest of this month. From 1st October I hope to arrange his engagement on monthly salary at the rate of £261 p.a. or thereabouts, (I understand he now receives £264). The exact figure and the incremental scale would depend on the current revision of salaries on which an announcement is awaited.
(4) The antiquities in Curium House and outbuildings will be separately inventoried in the form of a "shelf-list" to be prepared by one of the Museum staff assisted by Christofis Pdlykarpou as representative of the Expedition, starting on Tuesday next 7th September. Items from the Basilica and Ayios Ermoyenis should be listed in separate sections of this inventory. A copy of the other sections will be receipted and furnished to you as a record of the handing over of this part of our share of the finds.
(5) Receipts for that part of our share already brought to the Museum are attached.
(6) The custody of the Apollo site will remain the responsibility of the Expedition until 22nd September on which date, on the return of the Custodian, Curium, from leave, his substitute will take up duty as temporary custodian at Apollo and will be paid by us at the usual rate of 10s. per day.
(7) It is my intention to offer Christofis Pdlykarpou employment as a Custodian, for duty in the first instance at Apollo, but with rank of Head Custodian in the Curium area, as soon as his services are no longer required by the Expedition. I understand your sponsors now wish to send him for 2 month's experience in the Agora with a view to employing him at Gordion next spring. In that case we would /employ
R. Edwards Esq. Episkopi -Limassol.
