January 13, 1954Dr. G. Roger Edwards Curium Excavations Episkopi Limassol, Cyprus
Dear Roger:
I have yours of the 17th of December upon my return from Mexico City and have just started Gloria to work on your power of attorney. You should have this before very long. I am a little puzzled about your statement that I should send a check directly to Sir Panayotis. Does this refer to the ten thousand dollars paid in here or, as I presume, money turned over by the estate to purchase the materials? I have not heard from Mr. Ewing about this yet, but I assume that if the estate pays us the money to buy the things from the estate, then I will send that check to you.
Rodney may have told you about Dick Stillwell fussing a bit about fales right to publish on Curium but I think we have reassured him and that he will take over the theater palace. I gather that Rodney has written you suggesting that you get somebody from Athens rather than Ellen from here. All I can add to that is that we sure need Ellen here for editing. She has an awful lot to do this year.
Everything is going fine here and it is very good to have Rodney back to handle all the problems in your Mediterranean Department. There have been no particular roars from that department recently so I think everything is going satisfactorily.
I have just been off in search of a good designer for the Museum and think I have found a fellow in Mexico. I had hoped to be in Europe this spring but I have resigned myself to protests from the television studio about being gone from the program and now I am resigned to delaying the trip until next fall.
I don't believe I wrote you about a Mr. Heinze and his wife who may show up at Curium sometime late in the winter. He seems to me a very nice person and is very much interested in archeology. I have given him a letter introducing him to you and his wife up for a night or so. I said that if you had room and could put them up you would probably charge them their keep and if you did not have room they could stay in Limassol and drive out to the site. I don't really know very much about this couple except that they are the kind of prosperous people with an interest in archeology and travel who might, if sufficiently interested, do us a lot of good financially. My impression is that they would be a pleasure to have around for a day or two and would not be any serious trouble.
The best of luck for your work for this winter.
Yours,
Froelich Rainey Director
