5 April 1954Dear Emily:

After what may seem to you a long delay I think I have accomplished all that you wanted in connection with your gifts to the staff here. I believe Christos has already written to you. Savvas has asked me to help him write you a letter which you have wittingly approved. Savvas has expressed his gratitude to you and the others. I know they are tremendously pleased and appreciative. I know you don't know what they have all done with their gifts, but Christos only feels he has to answer for himself and I feel he has banked his. In the older years, which are when I was there, I know that when he was in the field no one had a particular interest in his extravagant wife, but they have been amusing. The time-consuming clutches of his finished paying off his debts have now been settled. So now we hope that they can start off fresh with a clean slate.

I enclose receipts which I drew up and had them signed. I gave them in Greek in order to explain what was being done. I hope you find these all in order and send you my thanks on their behalf. I am very pleased for them all, and send you my thanks on their behalf.

with all good wishes - … continues
