EPISKOPI LIMASSOL CYPRUS

19 December 1954Dear Ellen:

Putting business first, I should tell you that on 30 November I asked Roger to tell me where to send the Achilles Mosaic House mss. I expect he is very busy as usual and there hasn't been much time for a reply yet but if I don't hear within a week I shall send it to you by airmail. It is a poor thing but the best I can do. The note on acknowledgements accompanying the mss applies largely also to the Water Supply mss. Roger suggested that I send you this[handwritten: (ws)] after the Xmas rush. I shall hold it until I hear from you whether it should go by airmail (about £1) with drawings & photos (another £1) or what. Perhaps you don't need the photos for a few weeks, in which case I would rather send them well packed by surface mail.

The photos (50; 4 to a page) are loose but numbered. They are captioned separately as I have assumed that captions are typed on the mounting sheet before the photos are stuck on. I can put them on sheets if you like. Working quietly during the summer I can add drawings are ready. Two maps and 4 essential others that I think might be of interest - if this can be done. I can take it that the "printing" typing will not be done before the end of the summer (to allow for alterations in refs. to Figs. Tables &c, if necessary. Catalogue: Mitford has the epigraphy. Your Museum has the coins; What can I do? Chronological conclusions, based on these, must, I suppose, be left to experts. Roger vetted the sherds; in spite of my adoption of one side of the ocean or the other Spelling: consistently to the English of my suggestion of keeping Christofis, without consulting me when retyping the final, introduced a lot of American spelling - but of course not consistently, and it does not match my peculiar idiom. What can be done?

To save time, in case Roger may be exercised over the problem, would you let him know that our Air Ministry has granted permission for the publication of air photos 5009, 3293 and 5085 subject to the acknowledgement "British Crown Copyright - published by Permission of the Air Ministry" being made on each reproduction. Our Army HQ write "There are no objections to your reproducing and publishing the map "Kourion Territory"...."The source from which this map was produced should not appear on the face of the map and any acknowledgements you insert in the text of reports should be in general terms and not mention specific maps or sheets". Copies of these letters will be sent to Roger. He has, I think, prints of the first two phptos; No. 5085 is no improvement on 3293 though twice the scale and taken in 1952 (the others - 1946 and 9) but it does show the theatre more clearly that the others. I can send any that may be wanted. It would be nice to see the two good ones published with which publication. This, I think, but it is for Roger to decide with which publication. Apl-June 54 Hesperia has arrived here ends the "shop" (except that Apl-June 54 Hesperia has arrived here. Should it be sent on or can he get a for Bensaki (Jack Benson).
