NOTE ON MSS OF REPORT ON THE HOUSE OF THE ACHILLES MOSAIC

Handwritten: + in part to the Water Supply 1955 (to revised in ink)

[handwritten: (I do not know what arrangements are being made for] the publication of this material. I have assumed that the discussion of the mosaic by an expert will form the main part of the article and that my contribution is more or less of an appendix providing background. For that reason I have concentrated more on the mosaic period (which I call phase 1) than on the rest and have selected from a considerable amount of material in the way of notes, drawings and photographs what items seem appropriate to the main theme.[handwritten: )] The excavation is not complete and I have my limitations, so any editing that may be considered desirable will be rather hard on the editors but I have tried to help with notes [handwritten: wkx] on the sheets of captions for plans and photos.

As to acknowledgements - while I would not like to omit any customary courtesy it would seem in the circumstances presumptuous for me to propose a list. A complete list would comprise every senior member of the Expedition, our friends in the Antiquities Department, various distinguished visiting archaeologists and not a few local employees. The same problem arises with my ancient Water Supply paper. One name which should, I think, be associated with both efforts, by way of dedication or otherwise as those responsible may see fit, is that of George H. McFadden.

Handwritten: (in time, I suppose, the Antiquities Department will complete the excavation of this building. Meanwhile I hope to produce fair copies of some of the drawings which do not call for publication, at least at present, and send them to you with extra photographs for the use of anyone who may want further information for some special study.*

Handwritten: (*perhaps a note to this effect in the publication)
