Stocks bequeathed.
Sir P. told us that he expected to get these from the consul and sell them here, tho I had understood the estate wanted them to be sent to Philadelphia. Sir P. may be under a misapprehension. It seems to me strange that either he or the executors should sell them. Should they not be transferred to the Museum or the University for disposal as you see fit? [handwritten: What] about income from these from the time of George's death? Does that come to us or not?
Car insurance
George's policies on the two cars has now lapsed. I thought to renew them with the same company he used, but find that he had only "third party" insurance (I presume meaning liability), and since he is dead [handwritten: xxxx] and the cars still in his name we cannot renew this variety of insurance. The company suggests overall insurance to the tune of £28., as compared to the £5. or so which he paid per car. Could these cars be [handwritten: xxx] insured through the Museum along with the other expedition cars? We are using the Landrover regularly now; the Humber [handwritten: is] still on stilts, but I should like to be able to use it occasionally. I enclose the pertinent data for the cars on a separate sheet for use if you think Museum insurance is possible.
All goes peacefully here. I am biding my time a little on some decisions until Peter Megaw turns up. He was to return in November, but now I understand it will be sooner, since he has been asked to take part in the reconstruction of Paphos and other places damaged in the earthquake. Benson is going ahead with Bamboula. The Oberlins arrived on the 16th and since their arrival have been going over the objects from the excavations, checking, mending, etc.
Joe needs to do a little more work on the water-works project. I am considering asking him to do the city-gate excavation and the mosaic project, with Oberlin to assist. Will need Peter's advice about the city-gate. [handwritten: What] was thought formerly to be the city-gate and for whose excavation we are obligated now seems not to be the gate actually. Joe thinks he has a much better candidate in another spot, and he may well be right. So Peter will have to decide which one he will accept as fulfilling our obligations.
In the course of Joe's water-works digging last spring he found what seems to be part of an actual mint: two hoards of coins, blanks, along with slag and faulty impressions. I am wondering if this will not be good bait for Dorothy H annah.
