September 16, 1953Dr. G. Roger Edwards Curium Excavations Episkopi Limassol, Cyprus
Dear Roger:
I just have yours of the 9th and you probably now have my cable, sent yesterday, requesting you to deal with Caccoyannis in disposing of all the effects there. You should consider yourself of official representative of the Museum, authorized to keep at Curium all the equipment you think useful and necessary. As you know Mr. Ewing has agreed to advance us additional money from the estate to buy from the estate any personal effects such as the cars which we need. You probably have all the lists of equipment made up by Christophi for Hill which Hill sent here and which I forwarded on to John Ewing. Ewing is extremely anxious to have Caccoyannis dispose as quickly as possible of the horses, dogs and so forth and it is also my understanding that the estate will refund the Museum for the costs of maintaining these creatures up till now. Can you and Caccoyannis dispose of all George's personal effects, not wanted by the expedition and give us here, that is Mr. Ewing and me, an account of what is George's personal property retained by the expedition and what costs the expedition has had for maintaining the animals. We will then make a final settlement here and dispose of the balance of the bequest in the Chase account. Stocks and so forth I believe must be disposed of by the estate here when the cash balance will be transferred to the Chase account.
I have just arranged with Gloria and Ted this morning to transfer the balance of the original $10,000 bequest to the Chase Bank account. The balance is $10,000 minus $3,500 that is the original $2,500 deposit plus the $1000 sent to Limassol. The check received by surface mail is already cancelled, that is the office here stopped payment on it when they transferred $1000 by cable. I suppose you may as well return the check to us.
Items 1-3 in your list we agreed should be retained as you suggest and, as I said, we will transfer the balance of the $10,000 so that you will have full accounting for all of the Curium funds. We will close the other Curium account here.
Incidentally, in the above I forgot about the $874.47 owed Gordon by Curium. We will make that transfer here and deduct from the balance of the $10,000 transferred to the Chase account. Gloria
