DEPARTMENT OF ANTIQUITIES CYPRUS
Nicosia, 4th June, 1953.
Dear Dr. Rainey,
Thank you for your letter of 27th May. It was most fortunate that Mr. Hill was able to come here, that a copy of the will was found (I have not heard if this was modified in any way at a later date) and that Rodney Young was able to come over and consider plans for the future.
I can say that if the house is offered to the Cyprus Government on the terms indicated to me by Mr. Hill it will be accepted, and I do not consider it likely that in the foreseeable future itxis it will revert to the University Museum. I understood from Mr. Hill that in his reading of the will the furniture of the house would pass to the University Museum with George's other assets in Cyprus. In any case it is of little value out of its context and if it was ruled otherwise I imagine this furniture (and also any other personal property of George's essential for the work of the Expedition, such as photographic equipment) could be acquired from the executors without difficulty. When your expedition finally withdraws we would probably wish to take over at least the furniture on terms to be agreed.
Pending final arrangements the administration of the estate here is in the hands of the American Consulate. I know these things take time to arrange, but I hope that funds will be available by September when you plan to resume work. I imagine that the balance in the Expedition's account in the Limassol Bank will enable Joe Last to keep things going till then. In any case I shall endeavour to defer seeking repayment of the £100 which the Government has advanced until the account has been replenished.
I am very glad to hear Roger Edwards is coming to take charge in September. I am sorry I shall be away in England that month but look forward to seeing him soon after my return in October. Meanwhile Dikaios will be here and, if any problems arise which we can help with, I hope Roger will not hesitate to bring them to him.
It is a real consolation in this tragedy to know that provision has been made for rounding off and publishing the work at Curium to which George had devoted himself for so many years.
Yours sincerely,
