June 30, 1952Mr. George McFadden Episkopi Limassol, Cyprus

Dear George:

I have just read your exciting letter about the discovery of the tomb and surely want to congratulate you on a piece of good luck and good planning. As a metter of fact, I had thought you were about to arrive in Philadelphia and called your house the other day. They had no word of time of your arrival and am still wondering when you will be back. I also got your reprint on The Portrait of Ptolemy I Soter and copy of the Illustrated London News, with a grand article on Curium.

I have heard from Rodney about your visit to Gordion but I have not heard from him about my proposal that he break in Ki Cammann in Afghanistan. I am quite sure he would agree to do this in Afghanistan, if it did not interfere with Gordion. This is a very exciting area and I am hoping to set up a long term dig on the Bactrian plain but it sure needs Rodney, in the beginning at least. Our trustees are excited about future work in Afghanistan but we still have to wait for approval from the Afghanistan Cabinet. You may have heard that we are discontinuing excavations at Nippur.

Everything has been going along about as usual here except that it has been as hot as blazes, the worst I have ever felt in Philadelphia. I think back with pleasure to the brisk atmosphere in Cyprus, in March. Please give Joe Last my very best wishes and I hope to see you soon in Philadelphia.

Yours,
