Dear Dekei:-

When you handed over the key to me I found only £24.0.0 in the cash box. According to the books there should have been £36.2.0, making a difference owed by you to the expedition of £12.2.0. Would you, therefore, send me a cheque for this amount at your convenience and if possible by return air mail that the accounts may be in order. In addition to this amount you owe the expedition 1.652.89 sh, or $235.06 as per exhibit C enclosed with my letter to you of 15th August 1951. As I am sure you will agree Curium Excavations should have priority over private commitments in the village, I think you will want to settle your outstanding accounts as quickly as possible. When I was at Athens Mr. Hill told me that it was his belief that you were entitled to $1.000 travel expenses only and that you offered to forego this amount which was to be entered in the books as a contribution to the Bluff account. It was so entered in the 1949-1950 statement. If Mr. Hills' memory is not at fault on this point, you owe the expedition $1.000 in addition to the above amounts. If you have any letter from Pete showing that you were promised $2000.00 on travel expenses, this will settle the matter. If not I suggest you take the matter up directly with Rodney and Mr. Hill who will advise me. There is obviously some misunderstanding on this point. I'm unable to clear it up as Pete never wrote me about the agreement but I'm sure he must have written Mr. Hill. I don't know whether Mr. Hill has the correspondence on the subject still or not. Wishing you the best of luck in your work at Dumbarton Oaks this winter,

Yours as ever,
