EPISKOPI LIMASSOL CYPRUS

9 September 1951Dear George,

You will be glad to know that Kim is going on well and putting on weight. It seems possible that hard-pad disease may not be the same thing in America as it is here: or that there is more immunity to it here. An acquaintance told me of a case in which the dog recovered perfectly. Apparently the disease is also known by the name of "Continental Distemper". When I read your telegram to the Vet. his comment was "Nonsense". Anyway, I had put in train arrangements to have Monty inoculated when I got your next missive saying that you were sending the dope from America so I held fire. Now you say you want Monty inoculated with local dope if they have it - and this I will arrange. For one thing it is possible that a dope suitable for what is known in America as Hardpad may not be exactly the same thing as is known by that name here and I think our Vets are pretty well qualified to judge the issue. So by the time you get here you will know the answer.

I am sending this off on the chance that you will not leave as early as you said. In your earlier letter you did not ask me to keep your possible movements confidential and it is possible, though not likely, that I may have said something about them. As to Deke's movements, I heard him say this afternoon that he may have to stay on here until October or November in order to finish his work - but of course he may not have meant this really.

Mitford and Peter have agreed that one of the pottery washed, mended and drawn by Chrisilios under my supervision so far as I am competent to supervise. Mitfords idea is that Chrisilios is worth training in all branches with a view to the future - and the lad is keen. Have you any objection to Christos teaching him washing and mending if Chrisilios is willing to do so? No expense would be incurred by Curex on this account if you agree. I should like to associate Spyros in the washing and mending element at his request and without pay. The advantages of having one or two extra experts are too obvious to need dwelling on. I should like to have an answer to this as soon as possible in order not to waste time.

I am not at all sure about my going to the Sudan. I haven't done anything about it yet because I have had a lot of other things to think about. In any case I doubt if I shall be able to afford it. There is a lot of extra expenditure which one cannot properly put down to "Expenses".
