Dear Fro:-
Many thanks for yours of the 14th. I had written mr. Kidder about Bob's film as he had sent me a telegram previously about it. Bob was anxious to have it as soon as he came so it was cleared by our agent in Nicosia. As it turned out, however, Bob apparently used little if any of it. I told him he had better get an export certificate for them when he left the island and to make it clear to the Customs Authorities at the airport that the film was the same as that on which duty had been paid. As the film had been opened I don't know just how he could identify the film as the same on which we had paid duty. If I had known that Bob didn't require this film in Cyprus I could have left it in Customs where Bob could have picked it up on his way to Turkey. I enclose copies of the correspondence I have had with the Comptroller of Customs. I am applying to the American Consul to see if he can help us, but without some kind of evidence to prove that the same film that came in and on which duty was paid went out of the country again without exposure, I doubt whether the Comptroller of Customs will be able to give us a refund. The duty paid was £64.15.7.
I'm sorry some of the movie color film was overexposed. When I come home I'd be delighted to help Bob in any way I can to edit it. I sent all the black and white stills to Life Magazine by air freight as he requested. It was too heavy for airmail. I shouldn't be surprised if the stills proved to be better and more interesting than the movies, but I'm looking forward to seeing both of them.
Mr. Hill has been working on the new Southeast Building here for the last three weeks. Last year work here produced very interesting results. Building with two fine female heads in white marble. Last week, while setting up a fallen niche in the wall of one of the rooms, we found the statue which stood in the niche - a nude standing youth with a cloak over one shoulder carrying a large stone in the right hand and a reserve of two other smaller stones in the other. Three more are at his feet.
