CURIUM EXCAVATIONS EPISKOPI, LIMASSOL CYPRUS
9 June 1949Dear Virginia,
Many thanks for your note; also for having one of your offprints sent to me from Princeton. It came at a convenient time as I have been clearing out at Apollo a large bee-hive shaped cistern about 5.50 m. deep and having about the same width at the base. It was full of pottery. I removed the fill in 12 strata. Strata 2-8 incl. contained a great many lamps of Broneers types 22-24 and a great quantity of thin blown trasnparant glass. I could detect nothing which need be dated later than [handwritten: 50]-75 A.D. It is almost certain I think that 2-8 incl. was a 1st century dump. The strata are arbitrary, of course, [handwritten: there] being no change at all in the character [handwritten: *] of the fill. Stratum 9, however, was a real stratum, consisting of very dark soil and almost entirely free of stones. The fill above was full of rough stones of varying size. Conspicuously absent also from 9 were the Roman lamps and thin blown glass which had been found in such quantity in the dump. 9 was 20 cm above the cistern floor. There was a settling pit, 51 cm deep and this contained a fair amount of pottery including a Ptolomaic coin and a Rhodian stamped amphora handle. The coin is still illegible, but I will send you a profile of the lamp and a squeeze of the stamp. I'd be interested
