CURIUM EXCAVATIONS EPISKOPI, LIMASSOL CYPRUS
May 15 1949Dear Mr Rainey,
Falet' account of the first eight weeks of work on the hill of Curium was sent you in March, and I have been glad to learn from George McF. that you found it sufficient to show that [handwritten: way] a good beginning had been made of the Philosophical Society's grant.
I now enclose his much briefer and even more informal account of the second eight weeks' work. It is of course intended only to 'report progress', but will, I fear, seem none too clear without the plans it has not been possible to ask our overworked draftsman to prepare. I hope this lack can be remedied when the next provisional report is sent.
Regarding our renewed excavation on the site of the city of Curium, I am not sure that I know fully the precise terms of the Philosophical Society's support. Could you perhaps let me have a copy of the Museum's application for the grant and of the conditions stated in the Society's award?
George wrote you some days ago of what he has been doing this season. That the mound just outside the limits of last year's excavations at Apollo, attacked as an obvious duty, should cover a bathing establishment with walls standing to a good height and with the hypocausts under its three heated rooms more than half preserved, was a great surprise.
As you have doubtless heard from George, Miss Ellen Kohler, BA 1938, MA 1942, University of Washington, Scholar and Fellow in Classical Archaeology, Bryn Mawr 1946-1948, now Fellow of Bryn Mawr at the American School, Athens, has joined the staff here as registrar. Her first task is to catalogue the contents of five or six tombs of the Kalorizki-Mersinoudia cemetery with which Pete did not find time to deal in 1935.
I arrived here March 25th, two weeks later than planned, thanks to gripe-penicillin-&-sulpho's, and too late to see Deke F's first report before it was sent; and expect to remain until about June 25. We look forward with much pleasure to having Rodney Young with us the first days of June, after his visit to Turkey.
Sincerely yours,
