keep the writing of detailed descriptive material more or less abreast of the field research. Analytic, comprehensive and conclusive writing must naturally follow the completion at least of definite sections of research.

In archaeological research at extensive sites like Isin or Piedras Negras, preliminary reports should be published periodically and preferably in various current journals at no expense to this Museum. Dotailed and repetitive descriptions of the excavations, objects, etc. should be published in a single inexpensive journal by the Museum for limited distribution to specialists in the field. Final definitive studies of specific sections of the site should also be published by the Museum but in more elaborate format and for general distribution to institutions and scientists in other fields. Such a system should contribute to better writing by the staff and to a much less expensive publication program for the Museum. If the preliminary reports and the detailed descriptions are kept current with the excavations, the usual time lag between excavation and publication should be greatly reduced. Costs of publication for the total 5 years program are estimated at $20,000. (Some of the staff consider this too limited.)
