However, at the present time the $19,000 income of the Coxe fund is being allocated to building maintenance. Actually only $9,000 of this amount can be accounted for by the Coxe wing and the Egyptian Section - the remaining $10,000 being applied to maintenance of the building in general. If that $10,000 income can be recovered for research during the next five year period (for a total of $50,000), it would cover the deficit and leave a surplus of $10,000.
VII. Reduction of costs through collaboration and grants.
In the Mediterranean and Babylonian fields it may be possible to collaborate with the Oriental Institute of Chicago University and possibly with Peabody Museum of Harvard. There is also the possibility of collaboration with the British Museum. The agreed opinion is that such cooperative work is less satisfactory than independent researches, but the Committee may wish to consider those possibilities as a means of reducing costs to the Museum.
There is a good possibility of obtaining a grant of funds for research in Central America from the Viking Fund. This would in no way interfere with self-contained research by the Museum and is considered desirable. The Viking Fund administration will be approached in this connection if the Committee approves.
Costs of publication might be reduced through grants for publication from the Philosophical Society. If such funds are utilized, the reports will appear as published by the Philosophical Society and in its series rather than by the Museum in its own series or journals. This may be considered somewhat less desirable than to have Museum research published under the name of the Museum and the University.
